Exploring the Province of Madrid – Aranjuez

Exploring the Province of Madrid – Aranjuez

Were it not for the fact that we arrived in the middle of the Covid-19 lockdown in January 2021, we may never have discovered all the hidden gems of the larger community/province of Madrid. During this challenging time everyone was restricted to their provinces....

Taking on the world’s scariest walkway

Taking on the world’s scariest walkway

We wanted to add a day of hiking to our Andalusia trip and so we decided to tackle what was once known as the “world’s most dangerous walkway “, the El Caminito del Rey (The King's Little Path) in El Chorro, near Ardales in the province of Málaga. As there is a limit...

The Stanley Kubrick Exhibition in Madrid

The Stanley Kubrick Exhibition in Madrid

One of the benefits of living in Madrid is the access to a wide range of concerts, shows and exhibitions.  We've been fans of Kubrick's movies for a long time so when the Stanley Kubrick exhibition came to town it was a no-brainer.The exhibition is huge and spans two...

Two Days In Cordoba, Andalusia

Two Days In Cordoba, Andalusia

Nothing really prepared us for the sweltering heat in Andalusia in August. An unexpected heatwave with temperatures exceeding 42 degrees was no joke! But, the city of Cordoba was so charming that the uncomfortable conditions faded into the background.  Besides which,...

Tips and Tricks for travelling on a budget

Tips and Tricks for travelling on a budget

Car Rental – we shopped around quite a bit and found that renting a car for pick up at Madrid airport was significantly cheaper than picking up the car from a city location. In addition, a range of alternative, smaller car rental companies are present at the airport...

From La Rioja to the Basque Country

From La Rioja to the Basque Country

We were really looking forward to seeing the Basque Country. Renowned for its natural beauty and good food, this part of Spain did not disappoint. We based ourselves close to the beach in the Getxo suburb of Bilboa and explored from there. Going to the beach gave...

From Madrid to La Rioja

From Madrid to La Rioja

After having covered more than 3000 kilometres on many highways and byways through Northern Spain, we’re hooked! What a spectacular region!  Our senses were overwhelmed by the sights, smells and sounds of the gorgeous landscapes, quaint towns, fabulous food and...

We all know that it’s impossible to see everything in a country and you have to be selective. However, sometimes fate brings you to a very special spot.   On our way to Asturias and the tiny seaside town of Cudillero, we had been looking for a place to stop for a coffee and a break. By sheer coincidence, the off-ramp we took from the highway led us to Comillas.

What a find! The beautiful little town is famous for having some of the most important Art Nouveau buildings in Cantabria.  Fortunately, we were in time to visit the lovely El Capricho de Gaudi, a beautiful house designed by the architect Antoni Gaudi. It’s one of only three Gaudi buildings outside of Catalonia. We can’t wait to see his buildings in Catalonia!

Cudillero

In doing our planning for the holiday we came across on an article that listed the Top 20 Most Beautiful Towns in the world. Naturally all these “top of” lists are entirely subjective, but the photo of “Cudillero” caught our eye. This once bustling fishing village, nestled against the hillside is certainly very pretty and its steep,  narrow streets  and alleyways offer plenty of fabulous photo opportunities!

We “discovered” the dish Pulpo there at a lovely seafood  restaurant on the harbour front.  Pulpo is nothing more than octopus but the way the locals prepare it is “finger-licking good”.

Galicia

Two weeks pass all to quickly and now we’re in Sada, a suburb of A Coruna, in the very popular Community of Galicia.  As with the rest of the North, it’s filled with glorious landscapes and a delightful coastline with beautiful beaches.

We’ve packed in so much in these last four days!   (Galicia has so mush to offer –  it deserves a dedicated post.)

Some highlights included a visit to the beautiful lighthouse in A Coruna, a trip to Cape Finisterre and Santiago de Compostela where pilgrims on the popular Camino de Santiago finish their epic journeys.  The Camino has been on our bucket list for a long time and it still is!

Look out for our post dedicated to the wonders of Galicia.

Zamora

On our way back to Madrid we spent a delightful day in Zamora.

The city is filled with Romanesque architecture, gardens, and little parks everywhere!

Apparently, Zamora has more Romanesque churches that any other town in Europe!

The memory of  sitting on a park bench in the heart of the old town, listening to an orchestra playing classical music at an open-air venue just before  sunset, will stay with me forever!

A beautiful end to our first Spanish Road-trip!
