Exploring the World, One Destination at a Time

Have you ever felt that there was somewhere you absolutely had to be but you didn’t know where? Or maybe you woke up one morning with the realization that there was a whole world out there waiting to be experienced, but time was not on your side.  On entering middle-age the itch to “up sticks” and become nomads finally got the better of us.  So, we hit  the road!

Preparing for this journey was slow and by no means easy – from the time the initial thought took hold to the day we boarded the plane nearly five years had passed!  It takes time to pack up a life and figure out a new path.  Not only did we have to decide what to do with all our earthly belongings, we needed to figure out what format our journey would take.  We had no intention of staying in hostels and travelling around the world with back-packs. So, what would our journey look like?  We weren’t sure, but we were ready to find out! It turns out our journey has started in Spain and we’re currently living in Madrid.

Welcome, we’re Erik and Helene.  Join us as we explore the next phase of our lives and discover where the road leads us.  We’ll be sharing our experiences living as expats in Spain whilst travelling at every available opportunity.  We also plan to share some tips and insights for mature travellers like us.

Travel History

We’ve been exploring the world since our mid-twenties when film cameras were still in vogue. A few decades may have past but we’re still as curious as ever about what’s around the next corner.

Exploring the Province of Madrid – Aranjuez

Taking on the world’s scariest walkway

Taking on the world’s scariest walkway

We wanted to add a day of hiking to our Andalusia trip and so we decided to tackle what was once known as the “world’s most dangerous walkway “, the El Caminito del Rey (The King's Little Path) in El Chorro, near Ardales in the province of Málaga. As there is a limit...

Highlights

Here is a video of some of the highlights we’ve experienced during our stay in Spain so far.

Our Favorite Discoveries

1. The Guggenheim Museum in Bilboa

This fabulous museum did not disappoint! We could have spent a full day marvelling at the building, statues, and various art exhibitions!

2. La Sagrada Familia Barcelona

Construction on this Cathedral started in 1882 and continues to this very day. Designed by the famous Architect Antoni Gaudi, it’s a mix of Gothic and Art Nouveau styles on a truly grand scale. There is so much to take in – from magnificent stained glass windows to hundreds of statues and spectacular choir galleries. An absolute must-see! Prepare yourself for a complete sensory overload!

3. The Alhambra Palace and Fortress Complex,             Granada

This UNESCO World Heritage Site is on every list of the top must-see attractions in the world. It’s a spectacular complex containing palaces, gardens, courtyards, fountains, walls, towers and much more. We spent a full day there and then went back for an evening tour of the Nasrid Palace the following evening. Truly memorable!
